One of the reasons why many players did not trust Bloober Team to make the Silent Hill 2 Remake was because of their track record in titles. In the past, they have developed games like Layers of Fear (2016), Observer, Blair Witch, or The Medium in 2021. Each of them had their virtues and flaws, but they do not stand out as excellent works in the horror genre. However, their fate has changed with Konami’s survival horror, which has been the most important release in their history.
In a recent interview with GameSpot, Bloober Team’s co-director has acknowledged that their previous video games have received mixed reviews, although they were necessary titles to improve and evolve as a studio in the horror genre. “We want to find our niche, and we believe we have found it, so we are simply going to evolve with it. And the way that happens is more complex, but it also happens organically,” he says. He then gives an example of their first horror video game.
“As with Layers of Fear in 2016, people in the studio were saying, ‘Okay, we made some crappy games before, but we can evolve,'” says Bloober Team’s director and producer, Jacek Zieba, about their previous works. Just in case there was any doubt, he also says they are solely focused on horror, now concentrating on survival horror proposals, like the upcoming one called Cronos: The New Dawn. “We want to be a horror company. We have gathered a team that loves horror. That’s why I think it won’t be easy for us to switch to other genres, and we don’t want to,” explains director and designer Wojciech Piejko.
Bloober Team wants to make more Silent Hill games
He also points out that the success of the Silent Hill 2 Remake is not a coincidence for them. Having sold over one million copies in just three days, the remake developed by Bloober Team is the ideal excuse to continue making games in the franchise. The studio acknowledged that they are open to making more remakes or even Silent Hill games after the positive reception of Silent Hill 2 in terms of sales and critical reception.
