Two Harvard students demonstrate that Mark Zuckerberg’s smart glasses are a privacy hazard.

A few days ago, Meta presented the future of augmented reality by sharing with its followers a pair of lightweight and innovative glasses that weigh just 100 grams. With them, the American company intends to reignite interest in this sector, as user neglect has caused a €40 billion gap in the company’s finances. However, an experiment by a group of university students has not done any favors to the interests of Mark Zuckerberg.

As highlighted by The Verge in a recent publication, two Harvard students have created a demo showing how smart glasses can use facial recognition technology for a dangerous aspect: revealing a person’s identity, phone number, and address. So, thanks to Ray-Ban and Meta’s smart glasses, they used access to public databases and live streaming capabilities to identify people, taking advantage of the connection with Instagram, a program for identifying faces, and another for obtaining personal information.

The goal is to raise awareness about technology

To conduct their experiment, they used PimEyes, a very accurate face search engine, along with other public databases to gather information about people. However, the students assured that they will not release the tool, as their purpose is to raise awareness about the potential impact current technology may have on people’s privacy. And, in fact, in their demonstration, they show how they use the glasses to talk to strangers and extract their information without them knowing.

Unfortunately, smart glasses have raised privacy concerns for years, as many people are unaware they are being recorded. Still, companies like Meta and Google urge users to respect others’ privacy, but acknowledge that such possibility is subject to individual determination. And, as the students themselves indicate, it is almost impossible to erase a person’s online records, making it very difficult to guarantee that privacy.
