They were creating the remake of a classic RPG in Skyrim, until Activision told them “no”. Now, they will make their own version of Vampire: The Masquerade – The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Nostalgia is important in the world of video games, but when it clashes with the apparent lack of interest from certain studios in revitalizing or bringing back classic games, that’s where the players come in. In this chaos, a team of Skyrim modders set out to rescue Vampire: The Masquerade – Redemption, the vampire classic from Nihilistic Software and Activision, but the latter stopped them in their tracks. However, far from standing idly by, the community re-rescued it not as a remake, but as a reinterpretation of the original game.

The original game, Vampire: The Masquerade – Redemption, was the first title based on the popular tabletop role-playing game, released four years before the famous Bloodlines. Although Redemption offered an ambitious narrative, following the tragic story of a crusader turned vampire, its combat system was widely criticized and nowadays, although it can be bought, it is not available in Spanish and not accessible to many players, even less so by today’s standards.

Therefore, with the aim of correcting these flaws and doing what Activision doesn’t seem to have any intention of doing, the modding team has made significant progress, recreating the medieval and modern parts of the game in a modified version of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. However, after Activision’s rejection, they are now redirecting their efforts towards a new story.

From a remake to a reimagining, but the project continues

Interestingly, although they had Paradox’s approval, the owner of the rights to the Vampire: The Masquerade universe, Activision’s “no”, who owns the rights to the characters and the original story, forced the team to rethink their approach. Now, the project will transform into a reinterpretation of the game, moving away from any elements that may generate legal conflicts and problems with the American giant, but without undermining the work done.

There's another way to play Skyrim, and it's by using it to enjoy a mod that turns it into a remake of a vampire RPG from 2000

The lead modder, Galejro, explained that they anticipated this possibility, so the team prepared by creating assets and systems that could be reused in an original story. They have now launched a community vote to decide the new direction of Reawakened, the original subtitle of the project, with options ranging from staying close to the original material to developing a completely new plot. The goal is to offer an experience that respects the essence of the game, but without the legal risks that come with Activision’s intellectual property.

With this new approach, the future of Reawakened seems even more promising, especially as we wait eagerly for Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2. This game, developed by The Chinese Room with Paradox as the publisher, has been delayed several times and restarted several times as they aim to maintain the original essence and expand the vampire role-playing concept of the first Bloodlines.
