“They could have done much more”: The story of Space Marine 2 would have been better if it hadn’t been limited by its 3-player cooperative mode – Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2.

It has been almost a month since the release of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, and what is clear is that the sci-fi PVE shooter has delighted the community. So much so that Space Marine 2 has become the second best-selling game of 2024 in Europe, with sales figures reaching over 2 million units so far. The good news is that players will be able to return to it soon and there will be new content to enjoy.

However, some recent statements from the creative director of Saber Interactive have attracted attention because the studio felt very limited. Specifically in the narrative aspect, as creating a campaign that can be completed in cooperative mode with up to 3 players has been a barrier for the studio. They admitted that they made concessions, as Oliver Hollis-Leick commented in an interview with Gamesradar.

The creators of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 were limited

The development team “could have done much more” if the characters Gadriel and Chairon, who accompany Titus throughout the story, had not been so close to the protagonist. “We would have had more control over them by going to do their own things, and even becoming a source of conflict during the mission,” he reveals. “One of the levels in which we tried to do this is when Chairon goes on his own and separates from the rest of the squad. And that’s what we tried to do,” explains the creative of Saber Interactive.

If you are playing the trendy shooter, or if you are going to, you need to read this to know everything you need from the Warhammer 40,000 universe and understand Space Marine 2

“It felt like they were divided for a while, but yes, the closest we could get is that Gadriel and Titus almost kill each other in a cinematic, and then we have to return to battle as a team of three men again. So yes, co-op makes it difficult,” confesses Hollis-Leick. “I remember having a lot of discussions saying that there is not enough time for our characters to talk about the plot, to discuss among themselves, because things are exploding in the background. No one is going to listen to that; we have to be brief!” concludes Dmitriy Grigorenko, the game director.

Although there have been a series of limitations in this sense, the studio may have learned ways to dodge them with the upcoming content coming to Space Marine 2. Furthermore, they commented that the success of the latest Warhammer 40K game allowed them to be ambitious with an expansion and dream of a hypothetical sequel.
