They compare their horse riding mod in Fallout: New Vegas to Red Dead Redemption 2, and even a former RPG designer has given it the thumbs up – Fallout: New Vegas

Mods are a gateway to innovation and imagination. They come in all shapes and sizes, from the most absurd to those that expand a game to unexpected limits. If there are two sagas that have been a playground for mods, those are The Elder Scrolls and Fallout. In this case, let’s focus on the latter, specifically on New Vegas, an RPG that has now seen the possibility of riding horses thanks to a mod with an incredibly detailed level that has earned the approval seal from a former developer of the original game.

A Fallout: New Vegas modder, known as Xїlandro Axeuora, is undertaking an ambitious project that has caught the attention of fans and original developers of the game: adding horses to this post-apocalyptic RPG classic. Even though the game was released in 2010, the community continues to find creative ways to give it a fresh look, and with this mod, the experience of roaming the wasteland on an unmutated horse gives many yet another reason to play it again.

The mod, presented last August, has been so well received that Axeuora claims it has given him the motivation to continue perfecting his creation, although his ambition is boundless. In a recent interview with Aftermath, he explained the challenges he faces when receiving so many comparisons of his work with the horses in Red Dead Redemption 2, known for its impressive realism in animations and gameplay. “I constantly compare what the Rockstar developers created,” the modder comments, although he admits he does not have access to the same resources, such as a motion capture studio.

However, this has not stopped him from dedicating countless hours to development, stating that the process has even cost him his “sanity.” Axeuora’s goal is not simply to replicate the realism of Red Dead Redemption 2, but to make the horses in New Vegas feel “natural” in their movements, without compromising the fluidity of controls. “It’s a living, breathing creature. It can’t move or turn like an arcade tank,” he explained, emphasizing his desire to capture the essence of equine movement without sacrificing the player’s experience.

Jonathan Burke, former Obsidian developer, approves the mod

Axeuora’s work has been praised by the community, but the most significant recognition came from Jonathan Burke, one of the original programmers of Fallout: New Vegas. In a post dedicated to the modder, Burke praised the project as “impressive” and stated that everyone should applaud Axeuora’s efforts to bring this idea to reality. This recognition has further fueled the enthusiasm for the mod.

Fans of Fallout: New Vegas and mods in general have celebrated this work as “impressive and surreal,” and the expectation for the final release of the mod is high. The combination of such an unexpected element as horses in the post-apocalyptic desert with the game’s characteristic touch promises to add a fresh layer to the gameplay of this classic.
