Although it may be the subject of memes and countless jokes, the original Doom can be played on any platform you can imagine. Such is the impact of the id Software title that we have seen fans playing it on a LEGO block. And, as if this didn’t seem incredible enough, researchers have also been able to bring the Doom experience to a tiny chip.
However, there is one field that is unable to run this classic: quantum computers. As noted by PC Gamer in a recent publication, Doom can run on a potato or a toothbrush with Wi-Fi, but quantum computing is unable to run the title even in its simplified version with wireframe graphics. And, as a picture is worth a thousand words, the original news highlights this situation by referring to the “Quandoom” project, a recreation of the first level that no quantum computer can run.
The most powerful quantum computer in the world has an impossible task
To run Quandoom, 70,000 qubits and 80 million logic gates are needed, but not even the most powerful quantum computer in the world is capable of this, as its capacity only reaches 1,225 qubits. In fact, removing aspects such as music, sounds, or enemies between rooms does not help. And, it is also not possible to play the game even with simplified graphics and several significant limitations in its operation.
Lumorti, the developer of the project, has used 8,000 lines of C++ functions to implement quantum operations and develop a small 3D game logic. Currently, it is possible to simulate Quandoom on a laptop using the QASM simulator, but it is not truly executable on a quantum computer. Therefore, unlike the usual news about this title, this time we must state that it is impossible to play Doom on a quantum computer by the end of 2024.
