The smell of Expomanga at the Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments was real in 2019. It was so unpleasant that they were forced to change the rules.

I vividly remember when a childhood friend introduced me to the world of Magic: The Gathering by taking me to a store where cards were sold and players, young and old, competed against each other. The smell was so unpleasant that I had to run out. Five years ago, Konami had to take action because things were getting out of hand in Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments.

Personal hygiene turned into tournament rules

What over the years has become a meme about a certain part of the Yu-Gi-Oh community, in 2019 awakened in Konami the need to tackle the problem at its roots by attacking where they knew it could cause the most damage and noise, modifying the rules of the game.

Through a subsection in its regulations, the code of conduct for tournaments of the popular TCG game required that “all people attending a tournament do so clean and wearing clean clothes.” They also warned that “if your clothes are excessively dirty or smell bad, you may be penalized.” Common sense turned into tournament rules.

Unfortunately, the change in the rules in the United States does not seem to have had an effect there or in other parts of the world, and earlier this year, the viral exit from a tournament in Japan by a participant who seemed to have left the place after feeling harassed by the other players. The duelist quickly took to social media to clarify the situation and explain that, behind the reason for her departure, was the unbearable smell that had permeated the venue.
