The impact of artificial intelligence is undeniably transforming the technological landscape. Just a few days ago, we learned about the existence of SocialAI, a social network without humans designed to bombard people with a small circle of friends with fake interactions. However, the growth of AI is also linked to an idea that, unfortunately, is gaining more weight among a large group of people: the fear of losing their jobs.
As indicated by the TechSpot portal in a recent publication, there has been a rise in the use of AI in restaurants in cities as massive as New York, Miami or San Francisco in recent months. They are using AI systems that can handle the reservation system, as they have the ability to greet, answer questions about dress codes, inform about allergy policies, and much more. In fact, RestoHost, a company serving 150 restaurants in Atlanta, claims that its AI can handle 90% of phone inquiries without human intervention.
A subscription model with multilingual support
As reported in the original article, specialized companies offer customized subscription models to restaurants. Premium options have more features than cheaper plans, giving them the ability to communicate in multiple languages. Reports indicate that, despite online resources, many restaurants still receive calls and the most popular ones accept between 800 and 1,000 reservations per month through this method. Additionally, for some restaurant owners, accepting AI means easing the workload of the staff without bothering the customers.
However, there are also some disadvantages associated with this project. Brian Owens, owner of Crave Fishbar, stated that he was initially in favor of AI, but the situation changed when he started receiving complaints from frustrated customers who wanted to speak with a person. Some people have expressed their frustration when interacting with chatbots, even going as far as insulting if they can’t get the attention of a human. For this reason, user experience varies, and for some, there is nothing better than opting for the traditional way to chat with a real person.
