The first movie in 8 years of the legendary science fiction saga will arrive in 3 months with one of the darkest Star Trek groups as the protagonist

Published:

This weekend brought several news from the Star Trek universe. The most notable one, which we already told you yesterday, is the surprising renewal for a second season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy despite still filming its first episodes. The other most relevant news may be that Star Trek: Section 31, the first movie in eight years of the sci-fi saga, now has a release date.

As confirmed by Paramount+ with a simple image on social media, and with a panel at NYCC held this weekend in New York, the TV-movie will be available on the subscription service in the United States on January 24. In other words, there are only three months and three days left to end an eight-year wait for a new Star Trek movie, although this may not be exactly the premiere that fans of the legendary sci-fi universe dreamed of.

The trailer didn’t sit well with trekkies

Firstly, because it is a TV-movie. That is, a film made with slightly limited production values compared to a theatrical release like Star Trek: Beyond in 2016; and secondly, because the Section 31 trailer left fans of the franchise very cold when it was released a few months ago. Nevertheless, there are plenty of reasons to eagerly await its viewing. Firstly, because it brings back one of the most enigmatic and beloved characters from Star Trek: Discovery, which just finished airing a few months ago; and secondly, because it gives prominence to Section 31, a rather dark group in the saga’s lore.

To give you an idea, this is an agency in the style of the CIA, licensed to overlook many of the moral guidelines of Starfleet. We briefly saw them in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, or in the aforementioned Star Trek: Discovery. Learning more about them is always interesting, plus the film seems to be set in the Lost Era of Star Trek, which is how trekkies refer to the period of time between the adventures of Kirk and his two Enterprises, and those of Picard and his TNG.

In summary. On this March 24, we will see again the Terran Empress Philippa Georgiou, played by Michelle Yeoh, trying to save the United Federation of Planets while facing the sins of her past. She will be joined in the TV-movie by Omari Hardwick (Power), Kacey Rohl (Hannibal), Sam Richardson (Ted Lasso), Sven Ruygrok (One Piece), Robert Kazinsky (Pacific Rim), Humberly Gonzalez (Ginny & Georgia), and James Hiroyuki Liao (Barry).
