You may not be familiar with the name Linus Torvalds, but you surely know his work: he is the creator of Linux. Thanks to his operating system, not only the most curious users can perform all kinds of feats, but companies also take advantage of the possibilities of Linux to bring popular operating systems like Android to life. And, as expected, when Torvalds has an opinion, it definitely generates instant attention.
On this occasion, Torvalds (via TechSpot) has wanted to analyze the current state of one of the technological aspects that generate the most interest: artificial intelligence. In his view, the current state of AI technology can be summed up as “90% marketing and 10% reality“, referring to the exaggerated commercial focus over actual technical achievements. Therefore, he believes that this cycle of expectations drives numerous inflated initiatives and, ultimately, contributes to excessive market valuations like that of NVIDIA. And even though he finds aspects like generative AI or machine learning interesting, he believes that the real significant changes will come in a few years.
The big change will come in 5 years
For Torvalds, the real change in generative and machine learning technologies will come in 5 years. In his opinion, these tools will not only be more useful, but they will also be more understandable for the general public and their practical applications will be integrated into everyday tasks. Thus, the creator of Linux points in the same direction as Baidu’s CEO, as they both consider that a large number of companies related to artificial intelligence could fall victim to the bubble.
So, even though artificial intelligence continues to capture attention and generate billions of euros for companies involved in the sector, there are still many doubts surrounding it. That’s why some experts urge caution, as further research is needed to understand not only the true potential of AI, but also its limits and in what areas it may actually become problematic.
