Since its launch, Starfield has generated mixed opinions among the public despite being a new IP in several decades for the company. Bethesda is used to colossal successes in The Elder Scrolls and Fallout universes, but their latest sci-fi space RPG continues to improve and evolve with new updates or expansions on the way in the coming years as the studio works on The Elder Scrolls VI.
The release of Starfield: Shattered Space addressed some of the most common criticisms with the base game, but the experience was not completely smooth as it has ‘Mostly Negative’ reviews on Steam. Despite all this, some believe that Starfield will have a sequel, and interestingly, Skyrim’s lead designer Bruce Nesmith thinks it will be a spectacular game even though Bethesda has not even confirmed the existence of this project.
In an interview with Videogamer, the Skyrim veteran has pointed out that Starfield has built a solid foundation for a hypothetical sequel, just like it happened with The Elder Scrolls games. “When we were making Skyrim, we had the tremendous advantage of Oblivion, which in turn had the tremendous advantage of Morrowind. All of that was there for us,” he reveals. Nesmith essentially says that Starfield started from scratch in that sense, which posed a greater challenge for development and required innovation in game systems and narrative.
Many Problems Will Be “Solved” in Starfield 2
“All we had to do was keep improving and adding new things. We didn’t have to start from scratch. If we had, it would have been another two or three years of development time,” he clarifies about The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim. “I’m looking forward to Starfield 2. I think it’s going to be a spectacular game because it will solve many of the problems people say: ‘We’re on the right track, but we’re missing something’. It will be able to build on what’s already there and add many new things to solve many of those problems,” he says.
It’s important to remember that Bethesda is still working on Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI. After the release of this fantasy RPG, the studio will start working on Fallout 5, so talk of a Starfield sequel is purely Nesmith’s opinion, who spent up to 15 years at Bethesda. In another part of the interview, he pointed out that Bethesda doesn’t have to change game engines because it’s a much more complicated issue than it seems.
