Qualcomm’s most revolutionary chip promises to change the paradigm of Android phones with updates for 8 years

Published:

One of Samsung’s most ambitious policies is related to the longevity of its devices. For months, the South Korean company has been stating its intention to extend the lifespan of its mobile phones, televisions, and other electronic devices to seven years, as they believe that aspects such as artificial intelligence favor this condition. Fortunately for Samsung, Qualcomm (the tech giant) is working on the possibility of extending the update period by almost a decade.

As Android Authority indicates in a recent publication, the North American giant announced the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor. Among its main advances is the ability to take advantage of eight years of Android operating system updates, a sum that represents a great boost for the longevity of phones. Therefore, users can expect that devices opting for this chip will continue to receive updates until 2032. Additionally, Android phone manufacturers can now keep their devices updated for longer.

Not all phones will receive these updates

However, it is important to emphasize one aspect: not all phones with Snapdragon 8 Elite will receive the updates. This situation depends on the manufacturers, as they need to customize Qualcomm’s support package with their own software. Therefore, some manufacturers like Sony, ZTE, or Motorola have in the past offered only one operating system update and three years of security patches, even though Qualcomm chips allow for more updates.

The company continues to explore the possibility of offering extended support to manufacturers. Furthermore, its move is likely to influence other manufacturers, such as MediaTek, and they may choose to adopt similar policies in the future. Thus, despite the implementation of this measure depending on manufacturers, it is good news for users looking for devices with greater durability and long-term support.
