“Players would be frustrated”. The creators of Silent Hill 2 Remake confess that one of the aspects that cost them the most was the combat system – Silent Hill 2: Remake

Published:

Many who have played Silent Hill 2 Remake believe that we are facing one of the best games of the year. Konami’s survival horror has surprised the community, especially considering the famous combat trailer we saw in a past State of Play. However, Bloober Team has improved a lot since then, finding a great balance to offer a psychological horror experience in which James can also defend himself against enemies.

Mateusz Lenart, creative director of Bloober Team, reflected on this topic in an interview with the media Aullidos. When asked about the decision that caused them the most headaches, the developer mentioned the combat system of Silent Hill 2 Remake as it was difficult to find a balance. “One of the most discussed topics in this project was the combat system. James is not a war veteran, he should not be strong in combat,” he explained.

The combat of Silent Hill 2 was a discussed topic

“He is a normal man, someone who could have difficulties handling a weapon, and much more fighting monsters. But we also couldn’t make him completely useless, as that would frustrate players. Finding a balance between the feeling of combat and its mechanics was a challenge,” he mentioned. However, he understands that some players find the combat a bit slow.

“I can understand that some players feel that James is not agile or skilled enough, finding the combat a bit clumsy at times, while others may argue that he is too strong for his character. I think we have found a good middle ground, focusing on unique enemy designs and giving players a limited arsenal of actions and weapons,” he concluded. In related news, it was recently suggested that Bloober Team may continue collaborating with Konami after Silent Hill 2 Remake.
