The arrival of Overwatch 2 in 2022 was highly anticipated. Not only was it released in early access, but it came after the great success of its predecessor and, furthermore, made the leap to the free-to-play format. However, despite the many improvements and new mechanics promised by this version, very few have materialized. Today, we know that one of the ones that did, the reduction in the number of players per match, will coexist with the previous version: Blizzard has confirmed that, indeed, the 6v6 mode will return, and sooner than many thought.
With the announcement of the reduction from 12 players to 10 per match, limiting to only one tank per team, a division in the community occurred. Many saw this measure as unnecessary, while others considered it the perfect option to eliminate inconsistencies in competitive mode. However, the idea of a return of 6v6 has persisted at Blizzard, and last June, Aaron Keller himself confirmed that the mode was on the design table, awaiting approval.
Finally, and after a semester, the director of Overwatch 2 has confirmed that the 6v6 mode will arrive during season 14, which will begin in December. For Keller, although the 5v5 format has been popular and attracted new players, the return of 6v6 aims to revitalize and refresh the game. However, it “does not intend to replace it”, but it will be offered as an additional option to the standard mode of 10 players.
Blizzard hopes that this test will renew interest in the game and that both current players and veterans will enjoy both modes. Keller has also detailed some of the balance adjustments they plan to implement, such as reducing the survivability and power of tanks so that the 6v6 format works without affecting the current dynamics of the game.
Blizzard will implement two modes to play 6 versus 6
Season 14 will include two opportunities to try out 6v6. The first option will have an “open queue” format, where each team of six must have at least one character of each role (tank, damage, and support) and a maximum of three characters in any role. In addition, players can switch roles during the match. The second option will allow each team to have two heroes per role, balancing the composition of tanks, damage, and support to ensure a varied experience. Before season 14, there will also be a test of the 5v5 format with adjustments to the tank role, which will be less powerful to favor balanced gameplay.
