These past days Bethesda has been receiving more criticism than usual on social media and on Steam due to the release of Starfield: Shattered Space not convincing the community, specialized press, or content creators. Evidence of this can be seen in the ‘Mixed’ recent reviews on Steam for the Starfield expansion, indicating that players are somewhat upset with some decisions made by the studio regarding their latest content.
In response to this wave of negative feedback, Bethesda’s lead designer Emil Pagliarulo took to X/Twitter to post several messages to defend the company and address players who are only complaining about the space RPG. “Optimism and excitement are quite common in interviews. And in general, I am quite optimistic by nature. That being said, my optimism is in no way intended to be a mockery of any unsatisfied fan,” he stated regarding an interview published with Gamesradar.
It was there that he pointed out, among other things, that Starfield is “the best Bethesda has ever done.” However, in the X thread, he states that he is “very proud of Shattered Space“, in fact “everyone is” within the studio. He mentions that “most quests and levels were made by designers who have worked on previous Bethesda games and DLCs, from Morrowind,” he affirms. “If people haven’t played Shattered Space and they like Starfield, I think they are missing out. If people have played Shattered Space and still don’t like it, that saddens me, honestly,” he expresses.
Bethesda does not ignore the players
“You should know that we have also heard from many people who love it. Perhaps it’s a matter of expectations. Fans expect a lot, and we do everything we can to please them. This is what I can tell you: nobody, and I mean nobody, is patting themselves on the back at Bethesda while ignoring our players. In addition to Shattered Space, we have also spent a lot of time this year addressing community concerns and making fixes. We will continue to do so, and we will listen to our fans,” assures one of the Bethesda executives.
“Starfield is a massive game, and it takes time to address things. Game development is always complicated, but with a game as big as Starfield, any fix could potentially break something else,” Pagliarulo points out in one of his latest messages. “To conclude, let me just say… I love games. I love Bethesda games. All any of us want to do is make these games… and then make them better. No ego. No arrogance. Just a lot of hard work and appreciation for our fans,” he concludes.
