Months remain until the premiere of the new Star Trek series but we already have good news about its future. Whatever happens, Starfleet Academy will have two seasons.

It seems that on Paramount+ (operated by SkyShowtime in Spain) they are very, very happy with the production of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, the new series in the science fiction saga. So much so that they don’t even want to wait for the debut of its first trailer to announce its renewal for a second season.

It is a surprising move considering the risky nature of this spin-off of Star Trek: Discovery, which ended a few months ago with a more than excellent fifth season, but it is possible that the platform wanted to silence any doubts about its commitment to the franchise, although many fans wonder on social media if it would have been better to renew Star Trek: Lower Decks, which is airing its final episodes this fall, at least in the U.S. (not confirmed in Spain).

The first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is currently in production with no approximate release date. What has been announced is the guest actress casting of Tatiana Maslany, who you may remember from Orphan Black and, more recently, She-Hulk: Lawyer Hulka. She joins a cast that includes names like Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers), Holly Hunter, and Robert Picardo, the iconic holographic doctor from USS Voyager.

Set in the 32nd century, after the events of Star Trek: Discovery, Starfleet Academy follows the adventures of a group of Starfleet cadets as they grow up in one of the most iconic places in the galaxy, navigating through flourishing friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves, and an enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation.

Paramount+ also announced today that the TV-movie Star Trek: Section 31 will premiere on March 24th (unknown plans for SkyShowtime). It stars Michelle Yeoh as Philippa Georgiou, the Terran empress we met in Star Trek: Discovery, and is set in a period known among fans as The Lost Era.
