Path of Exile fans may have felt abandoned by the beloved IP. Grinding Gear Games’ first game has remained alive since its release in 2013, and yet the development team has managed to dive headfirst into a highly anticipated sequel. However, it’s time to be patient a little longer, as to the surprise of many and less than a month before the release of Path of Exile 2, the “Diablo killer” has been delayed due to issues with its online infrastructure.
Although the game development was almost complete for its original release date of November 15, the team is facing technical challenges related to the integration of account systems and microtransactions between Path of Exile and Path of Exile 2, as well as console versions. In this context, and to avoid releasing a poor version of the RPG, Jonathan Rogers, project director, confirmed that their studio needs more time to adjust server infrastructure and prevent chaos at launch.
This technical process, which involves making old user base data backwards compatible, has presented additional logistical problems, explained Rogers. “When migrating such old and extensive databases, all kinds of unexpected problems arise,” he commented. The team’s priority is to ensure that players do not lose any content or progress acquired in microtransactions when transitioning from one game to the other.
While the new tentative release date is December 6, the Path of Exile 2 team is still fully evaluating its infrastructure, with Rogers anticipating that they will provide an update on the progress in a live stream in the coming weeks, where they will confirm if they will meet the estimated early December date, so all that remains is to stay tuned for any changes.
The class system of Path of Exile 2 forced a change in movement
Although a last-minute delay is painful, the Path of Exile 2 development team has not faced a calm and quiet job. Earlier this year, the studio announced significant changes to its combat system due to the introduction of the mercenaries class. This change has led to a complete revision of the game’s animations, skills, and mechanics, allowing the use of WASD and mouse, or a controller. Additionally, melee classes have been improved and shields redesigned to offer a better gaming experience.
