With the hypothetical proximity of the RTX 5000 series, rumors related to future NVIDIA graphics cards have only continued to increase. In fact, the company’s popularity has also affected its stock of AI GPUs, as they have managed to sell all available units for 2025 before the year has even begun. However, there is a factor that caused a lot of headaches for NVIDIA, and as a result, Intel and AMD (its two main rivals in the GPU field) are looking for ways to avoid such a situation.
The launch of the RTX 4090 was marked by controversy with the 12VHPWR cables that ultimately caused numerous fires and constant damage to these graphics units. That’s why NVIDIA opted for the 12V-2×6 format, a power standard that replaced the failed 12VHPWR and is capable of delivering higher power levels more safely. In fact, it does so even if the cables are not properly connected, a feature that has led Intel and AMD to follow NVIDIA’s lead.
Recent tests show it’s not the safest standard
However, as the ProHardver portal indicates in a recent publication, it is very likely that Intel and AMD will still take some time to embrace these power cables. Essentially, this delay is because they still use the traditional eight-pin format, a factor that has proven to be reliable and has not presented the problems that NVIDIA faced. Therefore, AMD dismissed the use of 12V-2×6 in the RX 7000 series, as different tests have shown that the most popular standard is, at the same time, the safest for power levels below 300W.
Whether Intel and AMD will opt for this format over the traditional eight-pin format will depend on two factors: on one hand, the focus on more power and, therefore, higher consumption; on the other hand, the adoption of the standard by power supply manufacturers. Either way, in the coming months we will discover not only the details related to NVIDIA’s RTX 5000 series, but also the devices that the competition will introduce.
