Highly anticipated strategy game released, stocks drop 37%, but developers are “super happy”. Frostpunk 2’s parents have already recovered development costs.

Undoubtedly, Frostpunk 2 is experiencing a very unusual journey during its first days in the market. The strategy and survival title was released on September 20th and, over the weekend, it has managed to sell the celebrated figure of 350,000 units. However, this data has come with a rather bitter counterpart: the value of 11 bit studios, the developer behind the experience, has experienced a 37.73% drop in stock.

Let’s start with the positive part. According to a recent post on X, Frostpunk 2 is registering a very good commercial performance for the developers of the experience: “We are super happy to announce that we have already surpassed 350,000 copies sold of Frostpunk 2!,” the message reads. “Moreover, the total estimated revenues from sales have already covered the costs we spent on producing and promoting the game.”

“A huge, huge, ‘thank you’ to all of you for your support! This (almost) melts our frozen hearts,” continues the statement before sharing some promises for the future of Frostpunk 2. “The work doesn’t end here, we are continuously working on improving your experience with hotfixes and patches, and your feedback here is invaluable.”

Frostpunk 2 has been “a negative surprise”

Although the post from 11 bit studios suggests a successful Frostpunk 2, investors are not very happy with the commercial performance of the experience. As initially reported by Reuters, the developer has experienced a 37.73% drop in its value after the release of its strategy game; ultimately, the sales have not met the expectations and the peak of 35,533 concurrent players is considered insufficient.

“We were expecting significantly higher player peaks in the range of 80,000 – 100,000, so we consider 35,500 a negative surprise,” comments Piotr Bogusz, analyst at Erste Group, before also addressing the game’s rating on Steam (71% Very Positive reviews). “A drop in the average rating below 80% affects the game’s visibility on Steam, which could translate to sales.”

While the community has welcomed Frostpunk 2 with open arms, some players have pointed out optimization issues and a lesser sense of immersion compared to the first game. “Perhaps we were expecting slightly higher scores, but this negative feeling or disappointment among players is due to the fact that it’s simply not a sequel to Frostpunk 1, but Frostpunk 2… Maybe we didn’t detail enough that it’s not a clone, that it’s not a simple sequel, but a different game,” adds Dariusz Wolak, investor relations manager at 11 bit studios. Considering this disparity between authors/investors regarding sales, it remains to be seen how Frostpunk 2 evolves and the internal situation of the developer.
