In the battle for the GOTY of this 2024, there are several clear contenders. One of them is the latest game by Katsura Hashino, Metaphor: ReFantazio, an RPG that has not only dominated Steam as the most successful game of the year for Atlus, but has also established itself as one of the best releases of the year, capable of winning the coveted award; in addition to having a 94 out of 100 on Metacritic. However, for Hashino, this is not the end, and although he has just finished a development, the Japanese is already working on his next game.

This news was shared during a recent interview with the Japanese magazine Famitsu, where Hashino highlighted his enthusiasm for the future of game development in the company. In the interview, Hashino met with Keiichiro Toyama, the creator of Silent Hill, and revealed that, despite completing his work on Metaphor: ReFantazio, he will not take a break. “Oh, I’ve already started,” Hashino replied when asked about his next game. This statement suggests that, despite the successful release of Metaphor, the director is already looking ahead and working on new ideas.

For some time, fans have been speculating about a new project that Hashino had in mind, previously known as Project Re Fantasy. Although details have not been revealed yet, Hashino assured that his focus goes beyond his personal work and focuses on the needs of Atlus as a whole. “I think about what kind of things our team should be doing now,” explained the director, emphasizing his commitment to player satisfaction and the success of the company.

Toyama also highlighted, following what his professional partner mentions, that Studio Zero was not created exclusively for Metaphor: ReFantazio, implying that the team has broader plans on the horizon. Hashino shared his desire to not dilute the development team and to face new challenges immediately now that they have the recent experience of their last RPG. This suggests that Atlus’s upcoming projects could follow an innovative path while maintaining the essence that players have come to appreciate.
