Google’s current events have been marked by its fight against the viruses that reign in the Android ecosystem. Unfortunately, in the past few weeks the company has had to face malware that has affected more than 11 million devices, as it was linked to two applications with millions of downloads. And, while launching different updates to mitigate this situation, Google has also done the same with Google Maps and reviews.
As indicated by the portal The Verge in a recent publication, the American company is taking action against fake reviews and will restrict business profiles that publish this type of content. In addition, users will be warned about businesses that have been caught in the act, a situation that will be accompanied by the various sanctions that Google imposes: temporarily remove reviews, block new reviews, or display warning messages on profiles that violate policies.
A globally applicable measure
After starting in the United Kingdom, Google revealed that this measure is already being implemented in the rest of the countries where the service is active. Thus, Google requires that reviews reflect a genuine experience at the place or business, which is why it prohibits the publication of content that does not accurately represent the site. In addition, businesses will not be allowed to offer payments, discounts, or gifts in exchange for reviews.
Google also stated that it will seek reviews that attempt to manipulate rankings through, for example, posting from multiple accounts or using modified systems. At the moment, it is not clear how Google will determine which reviews are true and which are false, but it is clear that the company intends to mitigate this situation. Therefore, instead of simply removing fake reviews, the company aims to make suspicious behavior more visible to ensure that users are better informed.
