Electronic Arts makes a bold statement: The Sims 5 is not in their plans, as the company’s true goal is to continue expanding the existing The Sims 4 with more updates, community-created content packs, and DLCs. Ultimately, the franchise’s creators believe that players have invested too much time in the latest life simulator installment to force them to transition to a new game.
Kate Gorman, vice president and general manager of The Sims franchise, revealed this information in an interview with Variety. Specifically, Electronic Arts has chosen to change its strategy to expand the simulation brand in different ways: “The way we think about it is, historically, The Sims franchise started with The Sims 1, then The Sims 2, 3, and 4. And they were seen as replacements for previous products,” commented the professional during the conversation.
“What we are really working with our community on is a new era of The Sims,” continued Gorman. “We are not going to work on replacements for previous projects; we are simply going to add more to our universe. With that, you will see new ways to experience The Sims on different platforms, different ways to play, transmedia formats, and many cool offerings within this universe. So, absolutely, we will continue to support TS4 more than ever. We will continue to release expansion packs, updates, and fixes. But what this means is that we are going to do things a little differently. And it’s really exciting, it’s the broadest version of The Sims so far.”
What is Project Rene?
However, Electronic Arts’ intentions around The Sims brand leave a big question in the fan community: if The Sims 5 is not in the company’s plans, what is Project Rene? This initiative, which seemed to be the codename for the fifth installment of the franchise, promises to be a new generation that will reimagine the simulation experience with more ways to play, tools to encourage creativity, and storytelling abilities. Although EA never officially announced it as the next title in the franchise, it is now clear that it will not be established as a direct continuation of the saga.
“It’s not The Sims 5 as a replacement for The Sims 4,” explained Gorman during the conversation. “What this means is that we will continue to offer an HD simulation experience and what people would want for The Sims 5 – But it doesn’t mean you have to start over, reset all your progress, and feel like you’re losing all the game you’ve invested in The Sims 4.” Ultimately, EA’s intention is to encapsulate the future of the brand in the latest title: “As we think about the future, we want you to continue with all those families and generations.”
“Those creations are your progress, your commitment. We don’t want you to reset your progress,” reiterated the professional in the conversation. “Therefore, it’s not so much about the numbers in the games, but about knowing that the future of the franchise is more about maintaining your progress, keeping things across titles, and having a continuous experience, not a start-and-stop experience between products.”
The Sims 4 will start selling ‘Creator Kits’ with content created by players
Part of Electronic Arts’ strategy to expand The Sims 4 content includes the introduction of Creator Kits; content packs created by players, who will be financially compensated for selling their digital products. “Our community is what makes The Sims what it is today,” Gorman continued. “Our players drive us to evolve and innovate the content we develop and how we engage with it. We know our players adore the creators in our community and we are excited to expand how we support creators with The Sims 4 Creator Kits.”
“Currently, we are in the early stages of this new, lengthy journey, and we are learning how to discover, integrate, and use Creator Kits content in a way that truly expands the possibilities of what players can do in their game,” explained the professional. “There are more things we are working on to empower creators to connect and express themselves, and we cannot wait to see how things progress from here. I cannot comment on specific details, but we have worked closely with our initial creator partners to compensate them for their work and will continue to evolve that progress throughout the program.”
