The 1990s left us with great animated films that are now considered cult classics. The Lion King, Toy Story, Anastasia…However, not all beginnings are easy and many films that are now part of a generation’s collective memory did not have easy starts. That’s the case of The Iron Giant, a science fiction film that even Spielberg has referenced, but hides a tough story behind.
Where to watch The Iron Giant
The Iron Giant tells the story of a friendship between a robot and a human child during the Cold War. One day, Hogarth discovers the existence of a giant robot suffering from amnesia and showing innocence and friendliness. Thus, a friendship begins that is filled with problems when the military seeks the robot, as it is a weapon of war.
The film has a mature narrative that, unlike other films, such as Disney’s more recent ones, does not hesitate to show an adult context and deliver a very specific message. This message is marked by a harsh and tragic event: director Brad Bird wanted to show the idea of what happens when a weapon doesn’t want to harm people after his sister was killed, precisely, with a firearm, as he revealed himself.
But it wasn’t this event that caused the film to be a box office failure for Warner. With a budget of 50 million dollars, it barely grossed 30 million. Behind the reasons for this failure lies a lack of adequate publicity and the fact that the film was released on the same day as “The Sixth Sense”. It didn’t matter that the critics were positive in this case.
However, as with other films like Treasure Planet or Atlantis, time made the movie a great work of animation and it has even been revered by filmmakers like Spielberg in Ready Player One. Not only is the figure of the giant itself almost mythical, but today it represents a great science fiction story within animation.
For those who want to remember it or enjoy it for the first time, the good news is that The Iron Giant is available through the Movistar Plus subscription. The journey is worth it.
