Elon Musk is going through one of his most challenging stages leading X, the social network formerly known as Twitter. Due to the absence of an authority figure in Brazil, the country’s justice system determined that the platform could not continue operating in the country. In fact, not even the payment of 3 million euros could calm the situation, and at least for now, it seems that we will have to wait to see the return of Twitter in South American territory.
However, the social network is not in the news today because of the controversy in Brazil, but for a concerning aspect: the number of users continues to decline. As indicated by John Burn-Murdoch in a recent X publication, traffic has dropped by almost a third in regions like the UK and up to a fifth in territories as different as the United States. Additionally, it seems that most of the users leaving the platform are progressives, as the number of conservationist posts has increased in recent months.
X experiences a user exodus
According to the analyst, aspects such as Musk’s posts delving into a possible civil war in the UK have caused a massive migration to BlueSky, the platform’s main competitor. Furthermore, other users have also shifted their activity to Threads, Meta’s social network that has become an appealing app for those looking for an alternative to Twitter/X and do not want to remain tied to Musk’s platform.
In addition to all of the above, a study indicated that BlueSky has become the preferred site for academics, media, and political experts, although it has turned into an echo chamber with similar opinions, as users only see content related to their preferences. Therefore, a new debate has emerged: should social networks be digital public squares? For Musk, a staunch defender of freedom of expression, the answer is yes, but X’s numbers indicate otherwise.
