Elon Musk challenges the Brazilian government, who warns him of a potential daily fine of €825,000

Elon Musk’s recent weeks have been quite turbulent in Brazilian territory. After the blockage of X in the South American country due to the absence of a representative figure of the social network, Musk managed to get an extension after paying 3 million euros to unfreeze both Starlink’s and the platform’s accounts. However, that fine did not help calm the waters and, according to new information, Brazil intends to issue daily fines to Musk.

As reported by Reuters in a recent publication, the Supreme Court of Brazil ordered X to not attempt to circumvent its previous suspension order. Otherwise, they would have no problem imposing a daily fine of 5 million reais, an amount equivalent to 825,000 euros. Essentially, this warning is related to a recent update of the Starlink communications network that ultimately made X accessible to many users. Therefore, if it happens again, Musk would have to pay almost 1 million euros per day.

The dispute between Brazil and Musk continues

Since August, Elon Musk has been involved in various controversies related to the decisions of judge Alexandre de Moraes, the member of the Brazilian Supreme Court behind the platform’s activity cessation. Moraes stated that X intends to disobey the Judicial Power of Brazil and allegedly developed a strategy to bypass the blockade imposed by Brazilian justice. However, the lawyers defending the platform assure that the intention is to comply with judicial orders to resume its service in the country.

In the past, Brazilian courts have already blocked accounts related to the spread of fake news and hate speech. Musk, a staunch advocate of freedom of expression, described this measure as censorship and stated that he was against the decisions of the Supreme Court. However, they claim to be collaborating with the justice system of the South American country to reach an agreement that ultimately allows them to relaunch the social network in Brazil.
