Disney has found a goldmine in its science fiction IPs and plans to capitalize on it. There is plenty of news for fans of the genre.

Facing a deficit of Marvel Studios productions for this year, compared to what was usual for the producer led by Kevin Feige, Disney has compensated its lineup of releases with up to two sci-fi movies from the former 20th Century Fox, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and Alien: Romulus. Neither of them has come close to the box office success of Deadpool & Wolverine, but they have made it clear to the company that they can be truly profitable IPs.

It’s not us saying this, but Steve Asbell, head of 20th Century Studios, who in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter has revealed the film studio’s plans for the coming years with several of its sci-fi franchises. There is news about all of them, so let’s break it down:

Disney’s plans for Alien, Predator, and the Apes

A sequel to Alien: Romulus is in the works. Following favorable reviews and a box office revenue of $351 million, the company is looking to close a deal with its director, Fede Álvarez, to develop a sequel starring Cailee Spaeny (Rain) and David Jonsson (Andy). It’s too early to share more details, but we can’t forget that in a few months we will also see the TV series Alien: Earth.

A double release of Predator in 2025. It’s interesting to see how a setback from Marvel Studios with the development of Blade will be covered by a film from 20th Century Studios, in this case the movie Predator: Badlands, which will hit theaters on November 7, 2025, with Dan Trachtenberg returning as director and Elle Fanning as the lead. Before that, a mysterious film will be released, perhaps an anthology? Additionally, although there are no updates, we know that Prey 2 is in development.

Alien vs. Predator 3 is on the table, but not as you think. Much has been said with the release of Alien: Romulus about bringing back the infamous crossover of Alien vs. Predator from James Cameron’s not so great memory. The idea seems to appeal to the directors, both Álvarez and Dan Trachtenberg (Prey), as well as the big boss at 20th Century Studios who doesn’t rule it out. However, it would be something that is worked on organically with characters from both franchises.

Planet of the Apes will return to theaters in 2027. Another IP making a comeback to the big screen. No details have been given on whether it will be linked to Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and if its director Wes Ball, who signed with Nintendo for the live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, will return behind the camera. But if anyone had doubts about Disney giving the franchise a break, here’s the news.

Of course, on the horizon we also have Avatar 3: Fire and Ash, the third of five planned sci-fi movies in the saga until 2031. And we can’t forget about a possible sequel to Alita: Battle Angel that Disney is reluctant to announce, but that James Cameron also seems to want to develop.

In 3DJuegos | Confirmed, there is a release date for Spider-Man 4 with Tom Holland. The Marvel web-slinger movie will come between the next two Avengers films.

In 3DJuegos | Only China could avoid the movie’s debacle, but a “joke” caused it to be pulled from cinemas as soon as it arrived. Monster Hunter ended up being a failure.
