Computers with AI are selling like hotcakes, but their advancements have nothing to do with it

Artificial intelligence has become the most attention-grabbing technological branch of the moment. Much of this is due to OpenAI, the firm behind ChatGPT, which announced its intention to abandon its “non-profit” vision to attract more investors. In fact, the impact of AI has been so significant that we have also seen some controversies involving platforms that claimed to have a robot lawyer on their staff.

However, the intention of many companies is to take advantage of AI through everyday devices, which is why we have seen a growing popularity of computers with artificial intelligence in recent weeks. However, while these devices are selling well, the reality is that it has nothing to do with AI, but rather the opposite: their good sales numbers are due to people needing to upgrade their computers.

AI continues to make its way

According to estimates by IDC Research (via TechSpot), it is believed that the shipment of AI-enabled computers will grow by 2.6% in 2024, reaching 398.9 million units. Despite this, even the promotion by companies encouraging the purchase of AI computers for their benefits does not convince users, as this option is not decisive for buyers. Nevertheless, many companies do acquire AI computers as a way to prepare for the future, although they do not see a significant impact of this technology in the short term.

According to Jitesh Urbani, research manager at WMDT, manufacturers should better explain why a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) is important for users. Therefore, even if users do not value it, they should be aware of the distinctive aspects of their AI-enabled computer. In fact, a survey revealed that 84% of participants are not willing to pay extra for a PC with enhanced AI capabilities. Therefore, the situation will need to change in the coming months if they want to capture users’ attention.
