China plans an ambitious move to combat the United States with a new AI model from ByteDance and Huawei.

It’s no secret that artificial intelligence has become the golden goose of the technology sector. Such is its impact that even companies like HP are looking for ways to integrate its virtues into their printer ecosystem, but not many users are surprised by this option. In addition, other tech giants like Meta have leveraged the content generated by their users on social networks like Instagram and Facebook to train their artificial intelligence models.

Asia plans to outdo the United States and Europe with its chip investment between 2025 and 2027

As a result, countries like the United States and Japan continue to invest heavily in the development of these technologies, but they are about to face a very powerful rival: China. As reported by the portal Reuters in a recent publication, the Asian region intends to develop an AI model that uses Huawei chips to tackle the export restrictions on advanced chips from the United States. In addition to the presence of this company, there will also be ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok that is responsible for developing and producing the project.

China seeks alternatives to US chips

In 2022, the restrictions imposed by the United States limited the export of advanced chips for AI. As a result, ByteDance sought alternatives and will now bet on Huawei’s Ascend 910B chip to train a large-scale language model. So far, the company has used it for less intensive inference tasks, but it plans to take a giant leap to develop a complete AI model that requires more powerful and high-performance chips.

At the moment, ByteDance has declined to comment on the matter and has even stated that this information is false, but the company has placed over 100,000 orders for chips so far this year. Furthermore, the limited supply of these units and their lower processing capacity compared to NVIDIA’s options have led ByteDance to not establish a clear timeline for its new AI model. However, its chatbot Duobao continues to grow and already boasts 10 million active users in China, a number that would increase even further with the company’s new initiative.
