The technological war between the United States and China has impacted different fields. It is not only happening in sectors such as artificial intelligence or semiconductors, which have led to news stories about the investigation surrounding Huawei, but also in a unique field like computer operating systems. In fact, Huawei itself is at the center of one of the most curious news stories of the weekend.
As JeuxVideo portal indicates in a recent publication, Huawei is behind the development of HarmonyOS NEXT, its own operating system which emerged as a response to the ban on Android in 2019. Despite the sanctions, Huawei has launched innovations like the Pure 70 Ultra, one of the leading smartphones in the photography sector, and Mate XT, which became the first foldable phone with three screens. Thanks to this, Huawei has secured a decisive position in the smartphone industry.
HarmonyOS expands across mobiles, tablets, and other devices
With all these mentioned devices and other Huawei releases, the company already holds a 17% share in the Chinese smartphone market. This places them ahead of Apple with its 16% and marks a 64% growth compared to the previous year. HarmonyOS now has a user base of over 900 million devices, showing the rapid adoption of the operating system.
Thanks to this OS, Huawei has reduced its dependence on foreign technologies, strengthened its research and development capabilities, and also achieved independence from Google systems and services. Additionally, the Asian company offers alternatives like Aurora Store for downloading apps without relying on Google. Unfortunately for Google or Microsoft, Huawei’s success is likely to lead other Asian companies to follow their independent model, strengthening China’s technological position above U.S. restrictions.
