Everything points to Bungie stepping on the accelerator when it comes to sharing information about Marathon. In fact, the team has let slip clues such as details of its reservations and performing external tests. Now, however, the team is going all out with unreleased images and data that help us get an idea of the current state of the project. In short, Marathon continues its production steadily.
Bungie has shared a video via YouTube in which Joe Ziegler, the director of Marathon, emphasizes many aspects of this extraction-shooter experience. “It’s an intense game. In that sense, we like to say that it’s not a game for everyone, but if you’re interested in having that experience of intense survival and having a title where what’s at stake really matters and you feel challenged to survive in a very, very harsh and interesting world, then Marathon is perfect for you.”
Ziegler points out that Marathon will have “many different tools to do many different things within the game“. From valuable loot, to weapons and equipment to enhance powers and statistics, and even consumable items to get bonuses in the game. “Each Runner has a small subset of skills and, on top of that, you can customize them however you want.”
Regarding the setting and Marathon’s relationship with the rest of the saga experiences, the director assures in the YouTube video that Bungie is taking advantage of many existing details in the IP; especially “mysteries” and aspects related to “the psychological part” of the franchise. “We’re overlaying some elements that we think will help modernize it and bring a new story and world that we can update and amaze you with over time.”
What is the current state of Marathon?
While it’s true that sharing new details about Marathon is appreciated, the community still has many doubts about the current state of the project. Addressing these questions, Ziegler continues to say that “over the past few years, we’ve been making aggressive changes to the game and we’ve been iterating a lot.”
Therefore, the shooter is still in the works. “There’s a variety of different things in different states within the game,” the director continues, placing particular emphasis on elements in development such as environments, character models, and enemies. “It’s a bit early to present all of this to you as a single piece, but, as you’ve noticed, all these things are on the way.”
To conclude the details about Marathon, Ziegler has shown two images of playable characters in the shooter: Thief and Stealth (code names). As if this weren’t enough, the Bungie executive closes the YouTube video with a promise for 2025: the team hopes to conduct several betas to “add a significant number of players” to the equation. In this way, we may have the opportunity to try out the studio’s new proposal in a matter of months.
