The expansion of the dominant video game from consoles and PC to the mobile platform is something that, nowadays, does not surprise us. We have seen heavyweight sagas like Call of Duty or licenses like Apex Legends take flight with versions for iOS and Android. However, there is a title that, due to its success in the late 2010s, would have made perfect sense to arrive on mobile: Overwatch. The hero shooter from Blizzard dominated in 2016 with its launch, and the truth is that yes, today we know that a mobile version of Overwatch began its development, and although it has not been canceled, its fate is in doubt.
According to journalist Jason Schreier in his book Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment, which offers an insider look at the company’s trajectory, from its golden age to the crises of this new decade, the mobile version of Overwatch is currently in development. While it is true that we do not know when it will be announced or if the project will come to fruition, Schreier mentions, according to internal sources at the studio, that the executive leadership greenlit the development in 2021, when Walter Kong, current general director of Overwatch, took office.
Kong, a former member of the Hearthstone Team 5 development team, is a Blizzard and Microsoft veteran, where he worked as Business Development Manager for Redmond since 2001. However, as mentioned, the current state of the game is unknown. There is also no information whether it will be a direct port of Overwatch 2, released a year after Kong assumed office, or a tangential and independent experience from its console or PC versions.
For now, all we can do is wait. This is not the first time that the Activision Blizzard business duo has entered the mobile market. For example, Call of Duty Mobile has been a massive phenomenon, generating over 3.000 billion dollars in revenue. Additionally, Warzone Mobile, released in March 2024, surpassed 6.92 million in its first month of release. This success could set a precedent for the success of Overwatch Mobile.
Overwatch nearly had a television series produced by Netflix
If you’ve been playing Overwatch since its launch in 2016, you’ve probably thought, “this game would be great as a television series.” Blizzard’s magic when it comes to animating their shorts captivated us all. Although in eight years, there has been no clear attempt to take Overwatch beyond the video game, we do know that there were plans for a television series on Netflix, although they were ultimately discarded due to a lawsuit filed by Blizzard against the streaming platform.
