Bill Gates has shared his three biggest fears about AI

Published:

Taking advantage of the promotion of his new Netflix documentary series about the future of humanity, Bill Gates recently joined Kara Swisher’s podcast to discuss, among other things, his three biggest fears regarding AI. Typically, at this point someone would write “the third will surprise you”, but nothing could be further from the truth. We are well aware of the third fear because it is the fear of AI taking control, and in reality, Bill Gates says it is the easiest to solve.

For the other two, however, there are more doubts about how they could impact our lives. For the first one, Bill Gates talks about how “bad people with bad intentions” could exploit artificial intelligence for cybercrime, bioterrorism, and warfare between nations. He argues that the only hope is for countries to invest in creating advanced AI to combat these threats.

Secondly, there is a fear that many of us share, which is how the AI study showing an impact on 300 million jobs could affect us disruptively. According to Gates, a too rapid change could lead to a revolution in medicine, but it could also leave many people in sales, support, and other fields unemployed. It all depends on how we use AI as a tool rather than as a replacement.

Lastly, there is the fear of losing control to an AI that may become more intelligent than a human and jeopardize our civilization. However, Bill Gates assures that “if you have overcome the first two, this is not the most difficult of the three,” and that having overcome those challenges, we will have enough control and knowledge to prevent a major disaster.
