In the midst of 2024 DC Comics once again redefines its great icons in a new editorial stage under the label of “Absolute”, which promises to give a radical twist to the stories and characters that have marked the history of comics. This innovative label not only brings new perspectives on Superman and Wonder Woman, but also offers a fresh and surprising vision of Batman. In this new universe, one of the first previews that has caught the attention of fans is the transformation of Batman’s iconic cape, an element that has evolved surprisingly.
A new era for DC heroes
The Absolute label of DC Comics, set to debut in October with the release of the first issues of Absolute Batman, Absolute Wonder Woman, and Absolute Superman, presents itself as a radically new proposal for these iconic characters. This universe redefines the classic heroes, presenting them in completely different contexts than the ones known. Superman no longer has the Fortress of Solitude or his family, Wonder Woman has lost her Paradise Island and peace mission, and Batman has lost his fortune and his luxurious mansion. Instead of relying on their traditional resources and gadgets, the heroes of the Absolute series must resort to their innate abilities and ingenuity to face the challenges presented by this new world.
The surprising redesign of Batman’s cape
In this renewed universe, one of the most striking changes is found in Batman’s cape. For decades, Batman’s cape has been a symbol of his mystique and his ability to act in the shadows. Since its first appearances in 1939, the cape has played crucial roles, from protecting the Dark Knight from gunfire to facilitating his flight and gliding through the artificial gorges of Gotham’s buildings. In Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight Returns,” the cape is creatively used to reduce the visibility of a driver and cause an accident. In the Absolute universe, however, the cape has been reimagined as one of the most lethal and versatile tools that Batman has had in his arsenal.
In the first issue of Absolute Batman, written by Scott Snyder and illustrated by Nick Dragotta, a cape is presented that not only serves defensive functions, but also becomes a true offensive weapon. This redesigned cape allows Batman to make innovative moves, such as walking on stilts, hanging from the ceiling like a bat, and using hooks to catch and hit criminals. In a first comic preview, Batman uses his cape to grab a villain by the neck and throw him against a building, demonstrating the lethal capability of this new version of his iconic accessory.
A resourceful Batman, full of ingenuity
The version of Batman in the Absolute universe is notably different from his counterpart in the main universe. Without the Wayne fortune or advanced technological equipment, this Batman must rely on his ingenuity and skills to combat crime. Scott Snyder describes this new Batman as a brilliant engineer who has modified his cape to maximize its functionality in an environment of limited resources. The cape, which now includes bars and hooks, becomes an extension of his body and an essential tool in his fight against crime.
The new Batman is an urban guerrilla, with hiding spots all over the city and a combat strategy based on creativity rather than luxury. This approach allows Snyder and Dragotta to explore a version of Batman that is both more vulnerable and more cunning, facing enemies who have the resources he lacks.
Batman fans also have the opportunity to enjoy his new animated series, Batman: Caped Crusade, available on Prime Video. This series offers another perspective on the character inspired by film noir, complementing the innovative vision brought by the Absolute universe.
