After one of the best Play-Ins in the history of League of Legends Worlds, Worlds 2024 move on to its final stage. Now, the best teams in the world join the competition to fight for the most important trophy in Riot Games‘ competitive circuit. For Spanish fans, this new stage of the tournament starts with as bad news as the previous one. MAD Lions KOI hasn’t had much luck with a draw that, qualifying for the tournament as the worst European team, already put the odds against them.
Swiss Stage of League of Legends Worlds 2024
Looking at MAD Lions KOI specifically, the team co-owned by Ibai Llanos will face Bilibili Gaming (Chinese champion) in the first match of the final stage of Worlds 2024. Based on how the competitive year of League of Legends has unfolded, the odds are against them. The organization, however, has something to hold on to. Historically, teams from major regions that reach the final stage of the Worlds through the Play-In have performed well due to their greater understanding of the meta game.
As for the rest of the European teams, the draw leaves a bittersweet taste. G2 Esports should have an easy time facing Pain Gaming, the Brazilian champion who enters the final stage after showing a relatively low level in the Play-In. On the other hand, FNATIC faces a very tough opponent. The team of Oscarinin and company will face Dplus KIA, which finished third in the South Korean competition.

Explanation of the Swiss Format of Worlds 2024
The Swiss format may seem a bit complex, but it’s very simple in practice. In this phase of the tournament, teams play until they achieve three victories or accumulate three defeats. After each day of matches, there will be a new draw that will pair clubs with the same overall result. That is, if a team has two wins and one loss, they can only face another team with the same record. The first matches are played in a single map, but all those matches where qualification or immediate elimination is at stake (meaning teams have two wins or two losses) are played in a best of three format.
The League of Legends esports team chose this format because it’s one of the most interesting for viewers. Previously, there was a traditional group stage that, although a bit fairer, had the problem of offering a large number of irrelevant matches. Here, on the other hand, from the third day of the competition onwards, we have teams that are risking everything.
