Fallout 4 is a game that invites us to do all kinds of crazy things and live the most bizarre adventures. Some of these stories have become true urban legends, like the one about the possibility of the player having a romantic relationship with their own granddaughter. And yes, from a certain point of view, this is true. However, behind this unsettling possibility, there is an explanation that allows us to play with our puritan conscience more at ease.
As we explore the post-apocalyptic world of Fallout 4, we encounter synth, artificial beings that have been created with a curious biological background: all of them share the DNA of Shaun, the protagonist’s son, meaning: you. Although Shaun’s DNA is used as a genetic framework, the scientists at The Institute also applied the Forced Evolutionary Virus (FEV) to create a variety of genes that give synths diverse characteristics. This strategy not only allows them to create synths with different body types and appearances, but also prevents each synth from being a mere clone of Shaun. Therefore, although all synths share that “original” DNA, their genetic diversity gives them a uniqueness that makes them unique characters within the game.
One of the most prominent synths is Curie, who may be the first synthetic with whom the player engages in a romantic relationship. And even though Curie is genetically related to the protagonist’s son, her existence as a conscious being, with emotions and desires, makes her an individual in her own right. Therefore, the idea of a romantic relationship with her can be seen more as a philosophical exercise than a mere biological matter.
Keep Calm
Having a romantic relationship with Curie in Fallout 4 cannot be considered as “having a relationship with your granddaughter” because, although synths are based on Shaun’s DNA, this does not imply a direct biological connection in the traditional human sense. The idea that the relationship is incestuous is based on a misunderstanding of genetics.
In reality, humans share 99.9% of their DNA with each other, which means that most of our genetic heritage is common to all. Shaun’s DNA only serves as a base to create third-generation synths, like Curie, using a virus that introduces genetic diversity in the remaining 0.1%. This allows synths to exhibit a variety of physical and genetic characteristics, so they are not mere clones of Shaun.
From a philosophical point of view, the relationship between the protagonist and Curie can be understood beyond biological implications. Although genetic connections can be traced, these are not sufficient to define a family relationship in the conventional sense. Therefore, one can enjoy the relationship with Curie as an exploration of what love means, rather than a simple genetic matter.
