“AI is a bubble”: A technology expert examines how massive investment is affecting a sector that fails to take off completely

Published:

It is undeniable that artificial intelligence has become one of the biggest sensations in the technological sector. Thanks to its impact, firms like OpenAI (the creators of ChatGPT) have managed to raise up to 6 billion euros in historic funding rounds. Therefore, there are few technological options that can match the capabilities of AI. However, many experts are starting to point to a hypothesis that could become a reality: artificial intelligence is a “bubble”.

As reported by Le Monde in a recent publication, Canadian author and activist Cory Doctorow has labeled AI with this tag due to recent activity in the sector. He argues that there is a significant imbalance between the enormous costs of developing AI models and the potential income that can be generated from them. Therefore, major artificial intelligence models like ChatGPT require a considerable investment, questioning their economic viability.

An expert in the development of new technologies

Doctorow’s opinion is, in summary, that of an expert who is aware of all the latest trends in the technological sector. For decades, Doctorow has devoted much of his career to closely following the development of the digital world since the early days of the internet. As the author of several chronicles and numerous articles that delve into this evolution of technology, he mentioned in December 2023 that AI is sparking a growing debate about whether it truly offers a proportional financial return to the costs, a situation that is not so clear-cut.

According to Doctorow’s studies, many investments are flowing towards AI model manufacturers that are often not profitable. Additionally, Doctorow also criticizes the development of digital platforms and social networks, as he believes that the growth of these systems does not always have a positive impact. Consequently, more and more authoritative voices are considering that AI could indeed be a bubble, and therefore, questioning the economic viability of this technological sector, as the attention it attracts is not necessarily tied to the income and benefits it generates.
