Do you remember the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 campaign? It was one of the shortest in the franchise and possibly the worst in a long time. On Steam its reviews are ‘Mostly Negative’, showing that Sledgehammer Games developed the FPS shooter in just a few months. Bloomberg said it took about 16 months, while on average they usually take about 3 years. However, with their next big title, they aim to break this norm and extend it.
The development of Call of Duty Black Ops 6 has been extended to 4 years, showing that Treyarch and the other studios are working hard to deliver a polished product at launch. Recently, the associate director of Raven Software, the studio in charge of the shooter’s campaign, spoke to IGN about the Story Mode and offered important details. When asked about the harsh criticisms of Modern Warfare 3 for its narrative, Jon Zuk explains that they didn’t pay much attention as they were too focused on the story of BO6, so they didn’t react to it.
The Campaign Mode of COD: Black Ops 6 will be longer than Cold War
“We were already pretty focused on the story and missions we were creating, so we didn’t react to the reception of the previous game.” The extra development time allowed them to experiment with more prototypes, conduct more tests, and even improve the missions. That’s why, they also worked hard to offer an even longer campaign than Call of Duty: Cold War. “I think the game’s length will vary from player to player, but even if you try to rush through it, it will be longer than Cold War,” he assures.
“When the development cycle is shorter, sometimes you end up with things that don’t satisfy you as much as you could due to lack of time. So I think we had good opportunities to continue refining and redoing missions until we were happy with them.” Regarding the arrival of Black Ops 6 on Game Pass at launch, Zuk thinks that, even though he has “nothing to do with the commercial side,” he believes that Activision has thought about it and “has a lot of confidence in the success of the title.”
