Accusations against ‘best player in the world’ of Civilization for cheating to claim the throne, exposed to the strategy gaming community – Civilization VI

Published:

Becoming the best player in the world in any genre is very difficult, but achieving it in a strategy game like Civilization VI is even more commendable, due to the complexity and variables that exist in each game. Either you are extremely good… or you cheat, as apparently happened with the player who until now held the top position in the Civilization Players League (CPL), a user named Andrew.

His actions, individually, may not seem suspicious. However, all together, they generated certain doubts that have now been confirmed in a video that exposes the modus operandi of this player.

How do you cheat in a strategy game?

The obvious question is just that. How can you cheat in an online competition? The method is quite something. Just after the game started, with all the leaders already on the board and knowing the battle scenario, Andrew allegedly used a second computer to load save files from the first turn of other qualifying multiplayer games in that scenario, thus knowing in advance the key points on the map.

The actions of this user had no logic

Basically, he optimized his movements to the maximum to double the number of tribal villages he controlled, gaining a considerable advantage over his competitors. After watching the video, several players have reacted on Reddit commenting precisely that some of this user’s actions made no sense, like directing his explorers towards a mountain range when there is usually no way out, which would imply wasting several turns back and forth without any reward. In contrast, Andrew was heading to unusual areas, seemingly aware of what he was going to find.

“He spends three whole turns moving his explorer towards the mountain range, when in most cases a range like that probably wouldn’t have a passage. And if the range turned out to be a dead end, it would mean another three turns to move the explorer back […] This decision clearly makes no sense unless he already knew there was an opening through the mountains that would lead to a tribal village and a city-state.”

After this situation was discovered, the organization decided to remove Andrew, exposing him as a cheater. This user appealed the decision but it was denied after the CPL officials found out that he had manipulated all the evidence he presented, cutting out minimaps and removing icons of tribal villages, in a failed attempt to hide his dirty gameplay.

A tournament organized by the fans themselves

This Civilization VI competition arises from the fans themselves, who have established their own rules to enjoy fair games at the highest level. They have proposed several measures to prevent common cheats like having multiple players privately coordinate their actions. What they probably couldn’t imagine is exactly what happened with this, so far, Civilization champion.

Setting aside this unpleasant situation, strategy fans are already focusing on the next episode of the Civilization saga , as in February of 2025 it arrives on PC and consoles the long-awaited Civilization VII, which has already announced that it will consider the most beloved leaders by the community to shape the list of civilizations that will be available on launch day.
