A Spanish hacker makes history with Linux and Apple chips by successfully playing AAA titles like The Witcher 3 or Cyberpunk 2077 – PC

The impact that The Witcher 3 has had has led to it becoming one of those titles that are part of all kinds of experiments. Just like Doom, a work incapable of running on the most powerful quantum computer in the world, the work of CD Projekt RED is already one of the most popular in the history of video games. Therefore, after starring in a test with a processor that wants to compete with the x-86 line, now it’s the turn of Apple Silicon chips.

As indicated by the portal TechSpot in a recent publication, Asahi Linux can now run AAA titles like Geralt of Rivia or Cyberpunk 2077 (the most recent work from the Polish studio) on Apple Silicon chips. So, although performance in complex titles is currently far from fast, it is expected to improve over time. Therefore, after introducing Linux support for Apple’s Arm chips, Asahi developers are now focusing on the gaming aspect. Thus, the reverse engineering project of Héctor Martín, also known as “Marcan“, has achieved a milestone considered historic.

Gaming on Linux for M1-based systems is now a reality

Alyssa Rosenzweig, a well-known developer, announced that gaming on Linux is now a reality for M1-based systems. Since Windows games are x86 binaries that use Direct X APIs, Asahi seeks to make these work on Arm Linux using Vulkan, an aspect linked to emulation. It was also confirmed that the most demanding titles require at least 16 GB of system memory to function properly.

Thus, to take advantage of its gaming aspect, they need the Fex emulator, the Wine tool to translate Windows APIs to Linux, and the combination of DXVK + vk3d3-proton to convert DirectX calls to Vulkan. Therefore, each Windows title is virtualized through a compact virtual machine, allowing for smooth operation of both hardware and games. And, although achieving 60 fps in recent AAA titles is still an impossible task, this announcement already represents a historic feat for Linux.
