A simple detail has made me excited about the possibilities of Dragon Ball DAIMA after many years of passing over Goku and his friends.

Published:

I am one of those Dragon Ball fans who experienced the first broadcast of the series and who owns the complete first editions of the white and red series of the manga. However, despite growing up with Dragon Ball, there came a time when I became disconnected from the series. It was a mix of getting older and the anime becoming as convoluted as it was difficult to watch legally. But with Dragon Ball DAIMA, I have managed to regain my excitement with a detail that has nothing to do with martial arts battles.

Spoiler Alert: The text contains details from the first episode of Dragon Ball DAIMA.

Let’s eagerly seek a new illusion

I have always believed that all Dragon Ball series are surprising due to the accumulation of novelties: a new villain after another, a unique combat technique after another. In the end, you know what happens, that each time the series became more convoluted because it was a constant narrative rat race. In other words, what was once a well-managed surprise ended up being a parade of scattered ideas, which became less fresh as the plot progressed. But DAIMA has surprised me precisely with a detail that ends up disrupting an element of the series by looking back at its origins. DAIMA not only rejuvenates its protagonists but also some of its concepts.

With Dragon Ball DAIMA, things have started differently. This series has managed to surprise me precisely with a detail that has nothing to do with fights, battles, or transformations. The key to my renewed excitement lies in how DAIMA revisits the origins of certain classic elements, presenting a new concept that subtly alters something already well-established within the Dragon Ball universe in a way that is effective.

What makes this new perspective on the Namekians so intriguing is not just giving them a new origin, but that their infernal origin seems to be related to the demonic nature attributed to the original Piccolo when first introduced in the Dragon Ball series. This detail has surprised me. No one asked for it, and the truth is I liked being surprised by it. The detail that reveals this unknown origin is none other than the shape of the Namekians’ ears, which I find to be a small delight that Toriyama’s work occasionally provides in such a delightfully simple way.

This is where one of the greatest virtues of this start of Dragon Ball DAIMA lies: the ability to take classic elements of the franchise and give them a twist without losing the essence that made them great. These kinds of details, so simple yet so significant, remind me of why I fell in love with Dragon Ball in the first place. By the way, what does this new information mean for Mr. Popo? Sometimes there’s no need to complicate things to achieve a small impact. Although DAIMA is still in its early stages, it has already made it clear to me that it has the potential to hook me in.
