The recent news from Nintendo has been marked by two aspects: on one hand, the release of Echoes of Wisdom, the new title of The Legend of Zelda that worried developers for offering too much freedom; on the other hand, the patent case between Gran N and Palworld, the Pokémon-inspired title that has grabbed lots of news and headlines. And, talking about patents, a new piece of news related to the company has raised alarms, as the Japanese company has registered a mysterious wireless device.
As pointed out by The Verge in a recent publication, Nintendo has submitted a device to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) of the United States, but we are not talking about the expected successor to the Nintendo Switch. In fact, the model number suggests that we are looking at a new line of products, as the designator is “CLO-001“. As some may know, this “001” has been used in other innovative devices like the Nintendo DS or the original Switch, but this time the situation is different: it is only labeled as “wireless device” without any reference to consoles or controllers.
What does Nintendo have up its sleeve?
For now, only a basic diagram has been published showing the area where the FCC label will be placed. Furthermore, it does not have its own battery and only works when connected to a power source, meaning it will have to use a USB-C charger. In fact, it seems that its range will be limited, as it has 2.4 GHz WiFi signal and a 24 GHz mmWave sensor. Therefore, this last detail is the most interesting, as it could be a radar sensor to track movements or detect nearby presences within a range of up to 100 meters.
So, with no official confirmation, most speculations point to possibilities like its use for gesture control, but not all are in agreement. In addition to what has already been mentioned, it could be a tool for Nintendo theme parks or the return of a company’s sleep tracking initiative. For now, there are no further details, so it could also be related to Mario Kart Live, Pokémon GO, or some function related to augmented reality.
