The past decade has been marked by the excessive growth of interest in cryptocurrencies, a series of digital currencies whose main appeal is decentralization. Unfortunately, despite stories of users becoming overnight millionaires, the majority of anecdotes related to this world gain relevance when associated with fraud or scams.
This unfortunate situation has once again occurred in a bizarre way. As reported by the portal Ars Technica in a recent publication, Remy Ra St. Felix and his criminal gang were stealing cryptocurrencies, but in a traditional manner: by intimidating victims in their own homes using extreme violence. In April 2023, St. Felix targeted an elderly couple whom he mistakenly believed to be a significant cryptocurrency investor. This was just the latest in a series of aggressive attacks.
They even recorded videos of beating their victims
St. Felix’s criminal activity began a few years ago, during which he carried out several robberies where he demanded victims to transfer their Bitcoin to him. During a failed robbery in Florida, they kidnapped and brutally beat the victim, recording the act and demanding a ransom in cryptocurrencies. They managed to obtain 150,000 euros in digital currencies and also stole two Rolex watches from some of their numerous victims.
Unfortunately, the robbery against the elderly couple was the most heinous of all. After attacking the man and tying them both up, they threatened to violate his wife and cut off his genitals unless he cooperated and gave them access to a cryptocurrency wallet. After gaining access, they communicated with the leader of the operation in real-time through Telegram while attempting to empty the victim’s accounts. Fortunately, St. Felix and other accomplices were arrested in July 2023 and sentenced to over 15 years in prison, with some facing fines of several million euros.
