Speculation about the future of League of Legends has never been as high as it has been throughout this year. The promises of the developers and the fact that the title is about to celebrate its 15th anniversary have created a climate of optimism and widespread hype within the community. Now, Riot Games has offered a first glimpse of what those big changes and “cool things” they were working on for 2025. Although we will get into details shortly, the most important thing to know is that it involves a complete overhaul of the season system.
League of Legends seasons change in 2025
The information was confirmed in a video on the League of Legends YouTube channel featuring both Andrei van Roon (director of the LoL development studio) and Paul Bellezza (video game executive director). “Starting in 2025, we are going to change how we approach seasons. Throughout the year there will be three different seasons with distinct themes; each of them will have its own progression, narrative, and content updates. Our goal is for the seasons to feel different and offer unique experiences, themes, and moments,” they explained.
This new approach towards seasons will also impact the release pace of champions and the adjustments that League of Legends undergoes: “Each of the 2025 seasons will bring a new champion that will be part of that season’s specific theme and will somehow be connected with characters from the other seasons. Each season will also have gameplay updates.” It’s worth noting that, despite this new approach, Riot Games confirmed that the most significant changes will still come at the beginning of the year.
“One of the things we are working on for the first season of next year are those matches that feel lost once you have the nexus exposed, which often leads to many players losing motivation to keep playing. We are exploring options to enhance this experience and hope to create a greater competitive feeling at the end of matches,” explained Riot Games regarding the most imminent adjustments. The developers also confirmed that the idea is to make players feel more “immersed” in the world of League of Legends so they better understand “the factions” or “the motivations of the champions.”
However, most of the information about League of Legends in 2025 has not been revealed yet. “We are also preparing more significant changes, but we will save the announcements for a while. We will reveal more about our plans in a development blog that will be published in November, a few days after Arcane ends,” explained Riot Games.
