The new game from the veterans of Baldur’s Gate is a fantasy RPG with miniatures from D&D’s rival. Introducing Pathfinder: The Dragon’s Demand.

Although role-playing games have not decreased in volume or importance, in the last decade we have had significant classic RPGs that have further revitalized interest in the genre. Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader or Baldur’s Gate 3 are clear examples, and now Ossian Studios, a team formed by veterans of Baldur’s Gate, has announced their new game. This is Pathfinder: The Dragon’s Demand, an RPG faithful to the style of tabletop games and a complete adaptation of the rules of the second edition of Pathfinder.

The independent studio Ossian Studios has been with us for years. This Canadian team was founded in 2003, led by former Baldur’s Gate developers who also worked on various additional content for Neverwinter Nights and Neverwinter Nights 2. A veteran studio in classic Western RPGs that is now turning to independent funding for their next game. With this in mind, the Kickstarter campaign for Pathfinder: The Dragon’s Demand begins today, September 24.

What is Pathfinder: The Dragon’s Demand?

One of the distinguishing features of The Dragon’s Demand is its aesthetic. The characters are presented as miniatures in a world that seems to come out of a board game, with environments designed in great detail that mimic the richly deep settings one would expect in the most elaborate tabletop role-playing games. Despite what may seem like a visual limitation, the game breaks those barriers, as shown in the trailer, allowing the miniatures to float in the air to face aerial units, adding dynamism to the gameplay.

The studio director, Alan Miranda, and his team describe the game as “Baldur’s Gate 3, but in the Pathfinder universe, with miniatures”. This vision includes not only a vibrant aesthetic, but also the promise of a complete RPG campaign, with a low level cap, similar to the approach of Baldur’s Gate 3. Characters will be able to level up to level 8, promising to maintain a balance between progression and the difficulty of challenges, distributing the experience in a campaign of approximately 30 hours.

Among the announced features for The Dragon’s Demand are the ability to create custom characters from seven races, 16 classes, and over 30 backgrounds to define character traits. Players can form groups of up to four characters, including companions they will find during their adventures, with the ability to forge friendships and even romance. Additionally, the game will feature a vast spell system and an arsenal of armors and weapons that will visually change the character miniatures as they equip them.

With a team of industry veterans, including Alan Miranda, who worked on Baldur’s Gate 2 and Neverwinter Nights, and lead designer Luke Scull, creator of well-known custom campaigns for Neverwinter Nights, The Dragon’s Demand promises to be an attractive title for fans of classic RPGs. With the Kickstarter campaign about to begin, players can expect more news about this project, which is already generating high expectations in the community.
