“Never Say Never” – Baldur’s Gate 3 Father Does Not Rule Out Developing a Video Game from the Ultima Fantasy RPG Saga

Published:

Have you ever dreamed that the creators of Baldur’s Gate 3 would develop a video game of a franchise you really like? Larian Studios has explored various options in the past that were different from Dungeon and Dragons, but now we know they are working on two new RPGs and it is unknown if they will be fantasy games. However, the director of the fantasy RPG GOTY 2023 really likes a franchise that has been fundamental to the evolution of the role-playing titles we know today.

The Ultima saga is a franchise that awakens a lot of interest in the CEO of Larian Studios, Swen Vincke, who does not completely rule out making a video game. This is indicated by the scriptwriter of Baldur’s Gate 3, Adam Smith, in an interview given to PC Gamer. “What happened to me with Ultima was that I loved 4, 5, and 6, but 7 could be my favorite game,” he says.

One of the challenges of developing an Ultima RPG adapted to current times is exploring the virtue system and the creative problem-solving. “What if you have to try to find peaceful solutions? It is very interesting, but that happens in all current role-playing games, so it’s not as interesting a question as before,” Smith wonders (via Gamesradar).

If you were curious and didn’t know about the Ultima saga, this franchise was very important in the 80s, and it was from the fourth installment where it shifted to a more philosophical approach, with a virtue system, where we had to address themes like honesty, compassion, and justice. Ultima VII is one of the most important RPGs of the 90s, something that influenced Ultima Online (1997).

The director of Baldur’s Gate 3 loves the Ultima saga

Regarding the possibility of making an Ultima game in the future, Vincke says the following: “Never say never,” and he loves the franchise created by Richard Garriott as commented by the BG3 scriptwriter. In fact, months ago we reported that the director of Baldur’s Gate 3 stated that he would have tried to make an RPG of Fallout or Ultima if he had not obtained the license belonging to Wizards of the Coast. “It could have been Ultima, it could have been Fallout, it could have been Baldur’s Gate. There wasn’t much to choose from,” said the head of Larian Studios last July.
