Instagram will protect teenagers and children with new accounts with parental controls that will arrive by the end of the year

Published:

Instagram has become one of the most popular apps in the world thanks to its gigantic user base. Unfortunately, many take advantage of the platform’s reach to engage in illicit activities. Thus, Instagram has become a place full of pedophile networks that, unfortunately, Meta is unable to eliminate due to their reach. Thankfully, for the protection of minors online, the American company has managed to implement a feature that will help protect teenagers.

As reported by The Verge in a recent publication, Meta is implementing Instagram accounts for teenagers. These accounts have more privacy, include parental controls for minors under 18, and address all concerns about the negative effects of the social network. In fact, teenage accounts will be private by default, meaning they can only receive messages and tags from accounts they already follow or are connected to.

Minors under 16 will need parental permission

In addition, sensitive content will be set by default to limit exposure to inappropriate posts. Furthermore, minors under 16 years old can only change the default settings with parental permission, who will also have access to tools to monitor and limit app usage. Unfortunately, various studies have linked Instagram to symptoms of depression, anxiety, and learning problems, which is why this tool aims to bring about a change.

Last year, up to 33 states in the United States sued Meta alleging that it misleads the public about the dangers of its platforms. As a result, it will implement these measures and also others such as notifications for users under 18 years old warning them to close the app after 60 minutes of daily use. This update is expected to arrive by the end of this year in our country and in January to the rest of the world.
