After failing to convince the audience with Rebel Moon, Zack Snyder returns to animation this week with the premiere of The Twilight of the Gods, a series we plan to talk about later on. In the meantime, we wanted to look back and review the filmmaker’s filmography, specifically one of his early works behind the cameras.
No, we’re not here to talk about the Dawn of the Dead remake that he did with James Gunn as the writer, but about a documentary film focused on the figure of Michael Jordan that a 24-year-old Zack Snyder directed in 1990. Its name? Michael Jordan’s Playground, and you can watch it for free on YouTube.
Learning to Win with Michael Jordan
While the bulk of the film consists of interviews that review the career of the legendary shooting guard, who at that time had not yet won his first NBA ring, Michael Jordan’s Playground also includes a short fiction about a high school boy named Walt who has been excluded from his basketball team and begins to doubt his abilities and his future as a basketball player. That’s when the star of the Chicago Bulls appears to teach him a lesson.
Who knows if Zack Snyder, in some way, influenced Michael Jordan to enjoy acting and to accept to do the masterpiece that was Space Jam, released in 1996 with the Looney Tunes and Joe Pytka as director.
Returning to Zack Snyder, the filmmaker dedicated the early years of his career to working behind the cameras in music videos and all kinds of commercials, a job that allowed him to direct big Hollywood actors like Robert de Niro, whom he had in an advertisement for an electronics company, and to start his involvement with video games in a campaign he did with SEGA.
Now the director is taking a brief break in his career, although he admits to having up to three projects in the works, of which we will know the chosen one in a few weeks.
