Generation Z grew up surrounded by technology, yet they are lagging behind in a common skill like touch typing.

Published:

As they grow, members of Generation Z continue to gain representation and recognition in various fields. As a result, we receive some curious news, such as in Japan, where their preference for playing games is moving away from next-gen consoles, a sign of the little interest these platforms generate among the younger generation. In fact, they have been characterized by having a somewhat different view of what work means.

However, to the surprise of many, their reputation as technology experts (due to growing up with it) is linked to a surprising problem: they have many difficulties with typing. As indicated by the TechSpot portal in a recent publication, a recent report from the Wall Street Journal reveals that teaching typing with physical keyboards has decreased significantly. Therefore, in just a few years, we have gone from 44% of high school graduates in 2000 who knew how to use this technique, to only 2.5% in just twenty years.

The reality is that many do not master the keyboard

Christine Muller, a former technology educator, organized a competition called “Key Bee” to improve the typing skills of some students. Surprisingly, she managed to help some students improve and increase their typing speed from 13 to 25 words per minute, but that figure is far behind what was common in previous generations. Factors such as the popularization of smartphones have caused many students to prefer digital keyboards over physical ones, affecting their typing skills.

Between March and May 2024, up to 39% of tasks submitted on the Canva platform came from mobile devices, a situation that demonstrates the growing dependence on them. In fact, by observing students, many experts have noticed that their posture and accuracy are far from what is considered acceptable. However, the increase in computer-based exams has led to a resurgence in typing skills, which could improve students’ typing abilities in the coming years.
