In Homer’s Enemy, an episode from the eighth season of The Simpsons that you surely have memorized, we are presented with a story where Frank Grimes ends up losing his mind trying to understand how someone as irresponsible and inept as Homer can keep his job at the nuclear power plant. Now, a new chapter of the show has wanted to give us an answer.
Spoiler alert. This topic is for the most curious ones. If you are waiting to watch the 36th season on Disney+ in Spain, it’s better to stop reading now.
“I am like a Supreme Court judge!”
Without delving into its plot more than necessary, Shoddy Heat tells a story of intrigue set in the 1980s and starring an Abe Simpson who was then working as a detective. For a reason that is not relevant, he ends up facing Montgomery Burns, who bribes him by promising a job at the nuclear power plant for his son. No matter how many times he messes up and in what way, the businessman will never fire him. “No matter how idiotic I am, I will never lose my job. I am like a judge of the Supreme Court!” Homer celebrates upon learning about the arrangement with his father.
However, this major revelation somewhat breaks the magic of that clumsy Homer, unable to do his job properly, who still manages to keep his job. And it’s not the first time The Simpsons try to give an explanation for this situation. In Homer’s Crossing, from the 35th season, there is a scene where Homer realizes that his job at the nuclear power plant is a big farce. In reality, his control panel is just for show, and it’s Lenny, Carl, and even Mr. Burns who occasionally have to roll up their sleeves to prevent a Chernobyl.
Both jokes are fine, honestly, if it weren’t for the fact that they somewhat break the magic of several iconic episodes of the series. For example, Homer Defined told a story where Marge and Lisa’s father, out of pure instinct (or luck), saves Springfield from a nuclear disaster by pressing the right button on his safety console, making him a hero. But, was that console real?

Regardless, The Simpsons still have many stories to tell, some with Homer working at Mr. Burns’ nuclear power plant and some without. It is currently unknown when the new episodes of the series will premiere on Disney+.
