The Lion King is one of the best Disney movies and also one of its biggest hits, but there are some doubts surrounding the story that were never clear; doubts that are resolved if we turn to the deleted scenes. In particular, there was a scene that was removed for being too strong, but that was essential to explain two of the biggest mysteries of the story: how Nala got to Simba and at what moment Kovu was born.
The Lion King scene that gave meaning to the story
Disney is famous for expanding its most beloved universes later on and creating some unanswered questions. For example, the confirmation that Ursula was the sister of King Triton came years after the theory circulated on the Internet due to a novel that was recently published. The same happened with Pirates of the Caribbean. The relationship between Jack Sparrow and Lord Becket (the villain of the third movie) or his deal with Davy Jones were clarified in a very little-known novel.
With The Lion King it was not the case, but there were always several doubts in the air: How did Nala conveniently get to Simba? At what moment did Scar have children with Zira? There was a scene in the first movie that gave meaning to all this and that was deleted for being too strong.
It was a scene that included the song “King Scar’s Madness”. During this song, Scar is seen reflecting on why the people did not want him as king, to which Zazu pointed out that Mufasa had been a respected family father with a beloved queen. In response to these words, Scar decides he wants a queen and forces Nala to marry him, to which she objects.
Faced with the lioness’s refusal by all means, who even scratches his face, Scar banishes her and sends the hyenas after her. In this exile, Nala ends up looking for food in the place where Simba lives, which is the same place he arrives when he is small, also escaping from the hyenas. Therefore, this encounter now makes much more sense.
It also makes much more sense that Scar decides to have children. In this case, they would be Kovu, Nuka, and Vitani, lions born from his relationship with Zira after Nala’s banishment. Since Zira is the queen, it would also make sense for there to be lionesses who are on her side, as we see in the second movie. In fact, in the sequel, we see her as the leader of the banished lionesses.
Considering that Kovu is slightly older than Kiara, Zira may not have intervened in the fight due to being convalescing or taking care of her small cubs. Thus, all these doubts are much clearer and justified by previous events. However, Disney decided that the representation of such a song and the events with Nala were too much for a child audience.
